Someone who I’ve looked up to my entire life is my older sister. Throughout my life, I have seen my sister grow up and become someone who I aspire to be. She has taught me so many lessons throughout my life and has been the best role model I could asked for. I give credit to her for my work-ethic because I saw her spend hours a day studying and doing homework which benefited her so much in the long run.
If I could tell younger athletes one thing I would tell them to slow down and not put so much pressure on yourself. I began playing lacrosse at an elite level from a young age that I faced burnout early on. This made me see the game differently and I began to put a lot of pressure on myself. Coming out of burnout had taken me years of hard work.
I like to juggle pre game and before every single penalty shot I hit each side of the cage twice then hit the butt of my stick on the ground for good luck.
I think I feel more confident playing Away because the stakes are higher. I am definitely someone who thrives under pressure so when stakes are higher I feel more confident and energized.
Short term I really want to get into some good colleges and end high-school with a high gpa. Long term I want to become a medical professional and inspire/ help others around me.
I handle pressure a few different ways if I’m in a high stakes moment. First, I focus on my breathing and take very deep breaths to clear my head. Then, I do some sort of quick little movements to get my nervous energy out. I’m usually doing little hops during the game. And third, I’ll step on my toes with my cleats to dial myself in, focusing on one thing rather than what I’m feeling pressure about.
Teamwork means putting others before yourself and setting others up for success, knowing they would do the same for you. Something I live by is 'all for one and one for all', meaning that you can only succeed when everyone works together. An instance I can think back to is my lacrosse team working together to win a game in overtime, making plays and communicating to execute them.
My weakness as an athlete is definitely getting in my own head. And my greatest strength is my ability to communicate and work with others.
I manage doing everything by writing lists and avoiding procrastination. I thrive with structure and being busy, so when I am in an environment that I can be productive I have an easy time doing everything I need.
I think I handle constructive criticism well and I use it as an opportunity to better myself, rather than to feel down about it.
I think my biggest success in my athletic career was making all state my first high school season. When I heard about it for the first time I felt so excited and grateful for those who helped me achieve it.
I would like people to know that I am a Morgan’s message ambassador who strives to help other athletes deal with struggles I have dealt with myself!
Morgan’s Message® is a 501(c)(3) that strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.
We aim to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone.
