Athlete Interview

Someone you look up to; athlete, coach, family etc. and why?

Someone I really look up to is my PAVC coach, Rachel. She's had such a huge impact on me, not only as an athlete but as a person. She constantly pushes me to be better and doesn't let me give up on myself. I can talk to her about cheer, personal things or anything I'm struggling with and she always seems to know what to say. She has shown me what it means to be a coach who genuinely cares about her athletes.

If you could give one piece of advice to younger athletes, what would it be?

If I could give one piece of advice to a younger athlete, it would be to always lead with purpose. Give everything you have, even when things get difficult. Don't compare yourself to anyone else, and don't let setbacks make you give up. Your journey is your own, and your hard work will always be worth it.

Do you have any odd pre-game rituals?

It’s not a “pre-game” ritual but something I do before every competition is get ready with my team. We all bring lots of different breakfast foods and get ready in a separate office near the gym. We listen to music, eat yummy food before our completions, make lots of inside jokes and just overall make really great memories. Before we have to cheer at the football or basketball games we just meet, do some stretching and occasionally make some TikToks.

Are you more confident at Home or Away games and why?

We don’t cheer at any away games so I would have to say Home games!!

What are your short-term and long-term aspirations?

Shortterm: I want to keep improving as a cheerleader, become a stronger leader, continue competing at a high level and keep growing my confidence. I also want to continue doing well academically and take advantage of leadership opportunities.

Longterm: I want to go to college and build a career that I'm genuinely passionate about. I would love to continue being involved in athletics, whether that's competing, coaching or mentoring younger athletes but I also want to explore opportunities outside of sports. Ultimately, I want to have a successful career, travel, build a life I'm proud of and make a positive impact on the people around me. I don't have every detail of my future figured out yet but I know I want to keep growing, take opportunities when they come and never limit myself to what I think I can accomplish.

How do you handle pressure during a critical game or performance?

I try to focus on what I can control instead of thinking about everything that could go wrong. Before a big performance I remind myself of all the practices and preparation that got me there. I focus on my job, trust my teammates and try to stay in the moment instead of getting overwhelmed by the pressure. I've learned that sometimes the best thing you can do is take a breath, trust your training and just go for it.

What does teamwork mean to you, and share a meaningful leadership moment.

To me, teamwork means knowing that you don't have to do everything alone. Everyone has a role, and you have to trust the people around you. One person who has really taught me that is my PAVC coach, Rachel. She pushes me to try again when I want to give up and always reminds me that I am capable of more than I think. She has taught me how important it is to lead with purpose and support the people around you. I've also learned that being a leader doesn't always mean being the loudest person, it means being someone your teammates can count on.

What would you say are your greatest strengths and weaknesses as an athlete?

One of my weaknesses is that I can sometimes put too much pressure on myself. I want to do everything perfectly and when I make a mistake, I can be harder on myself than I need to be. I'm working on remembering that mistakes are part of growing and that I don't have to be perfect to be successful.

One of my biggest strengths is my determination. When I really care about something, I'm willing to work for it and keep trying even when it doesn't come easily. I also think I'm a supportive teammate and someone who genuinely wants the people around me to succeed.

How do you manage you athletic responsibilities with academics & personal commitments?

I manage everything by staying organized and making sure I know what needs to get done. Between cheer, school and other responsibilities I have learned that time management is really important. I try not to wait until the last minute and make sure I prioritize what is most important. Being involved in so many things has taught me how to balance my time while still giving my best effort to everything I commit to.

How do you handle constructive criticism & feedback from coaching staff?

I try to see criticism as an opportunity instead of taking it personally. If a coach is giving me feedback it's because they see something I can improve. I listen, ask questions if I don't understand and then try to apply it at the next practice. My coaches have taught me that being coachable is one of the most important qualities an athlete can have because there's always something new you can learn.

What has been a big success moment so far, and how do you remember it making you feel?

One of my biggest success moments was winning first place with my team. I remember feeling so proud because I knew how much work everyone had put into that routine. Getting the banner and trophy was exciting because it was something physical that showed all of our hard work had paid off but what meant even more was celebrating that moment with my teammates. Making NH Elite and being named MVP through PAVC are also accomplishments I'm really proud of because they reminded me that all the work I put in was actually making me a better athlete.

An interesting fact about me is...

I am left handed but do basically everything expect writing with my right! Like tumbling or brushing my hair!

Outside of sports I really enjoy spending time with my friends, family, boyfriend and making memories with the people I care about. I love listening to music, making TikToks, making vlogs with my friends, etc. I also really enjoy being involved in my school and community. I'm in Class Office, I am in NHS (National Honors Society) and I volunteer as a Junior Demo for the Junior Spartans program, where I get to work with younger athletes and encourage them. I am also trying to get the most community service hours in my grade! So far I am at almost two hundred and working towards getting another hundred this summer! I like being able to make people feel comfortable and supported, I always try to make my friends seem valued and seen. I also love traveling, going out and trying new things and just making the most out of my free time. I think having things I enjoy outside of sports is important because it gives me a chance to relax, be myself, and spend time with the people who make me happy.
